Chromebooks run Chrome OS, a browser-first operating system that treats the web as the primary application layer. That design choice — great for security and battery life — means that anything requiring a native install is off the table by default. Extensions are subject to policy. USB installs are disabled on managed accounts. Native VPN apps are unavailable on most managed devices.
A web proxy is one of the few tools that operates entirely within this constraint. It is a website, not an app. You open it in Chrome, paste a URL, and load the destination inside the same tab. Nothing installs. Nothing needs admin permission.

Why a proxy fits the Chrome OS model
Managed network environments — a corporate campus, a co-working space, a hotel Wi-Fi network — typically filter at three levels: DNS (blocking domain lookups), IP (dropping traffic to certain addresses), and increasingly, deep packet inspection at the network edge. A web proxy works around DNS and IP filtering because the network only sees an encrypted connection to the proxy’s domain. The destination — YouTube, Instagram, ChatGPT — is served back through the same browser tab.
How to open a proxy on a Chromebook
- Open a new tab in Chrome (the primary browser on Chrome OS).
- Type

- Read the destination inside the same tab.
That is the entire flow. There is no app to install, no extension to enable, no VPN configuration to change. If step 2 loads, you are through.
What works well
- YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X, Reddit, Facebook — the common social and video web loads through a proxy without issue. Video plays at browser-standard quality.
- ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity — AI chat services work fine because they are ordinary web apps.
- Discord, WhatsApp Web, Telegram Web — messaging generally works. WebSocket-heavy apps can occasionally hiccup during long sessions, but the browser tab reconnects on its own.
- News sites, Wikipedia, forums — trivial for any proxy.
What does not work
- Native Chrome OS installs. A proxy does not give you a way to install anything, and it should not. Chromebooks stay managed.
- DRM streaming. Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video refuse to play through a proxy. The DRM stack rejects proxied streams — that is a decision by the streaming platform, not something a proxy can address.
- Video calls that use camera and microphone. Zoom, Meet, and Discord voice channels need direct access to browser media devices in a way that most proxies do not forward cleanly. Text chat works; voice often does not.
- Device-level policy. The proxy does not change what a device administrator can see about the Chromebook itself. It changes what the network sees, not what the device sees.
What the network and device can see
The distinction matters:
- The network sees an encrypted TLS connection to
anyproxy.site. It does not see the destination URL or the page contents. - The Chromebook itself — if it is enrolled in a device management system — can log the tabs you open and the URLs typed into the address bar via Chrome sync. That data goes to the Google Workspace tenant that administers the device, not the network.
Different systems, different visibility. A proxy addresses network-level filtering. It does not address device-level policy.
The honest boundary
A web proxy is a good fit for opening a specific site on a managed Chromebook when the block sits at the network level. It is not a way to change what the device itself is. If your organisation’s acceptable-use policy prohibits proxy use, no tool changes the fact that you agreed to that policy when you signed in. Read the policy first.
For personal Chromebooks on home Wi-Fi, none of this friction applies — a proxy is simply a fast way to reach a page that is region-blocked or ISP-throttled.
The bottom line

It handles YouTube, TikTok, ChatGPT, Reddit, Instagram, and most other common browser tasks. It does not handle DRM-locked streaming or platform-native voice calls, and it does not modify the device itself.
