X itself is not blocked in India: 28,663 of 29,232 OONI tests of twitter.com from Indian networks loaded normally between 15 July and 15 October 2026. What India blocks is individual accounts and posts, through confidential Section 69A orders that X 'withholds' in India only; in May 2025 X said it had been ordered to block over 8,000 accounts. X's court challenge failed in the Karnataka High Court on 30 June 2023 and its appeal is pending. Through AnyProxy on 15 October 2026, results were mixed: profile pages stayed blank in our automated browser, while a regular Chrome window via Singapore partly loaded a profile; logged-out X shows limited content anyway.

Measured inside India · OONI
29,232 OONI tests of twitter.com from 2026-07-15 to 2026-10-15: 28,663 loaded normally, 450 anomalies (not proof of blocking), 45 confirmed blocked, 74 test failures.
X loads on Indian ISPs: Jio, Airtel, ACT and BSNL all show 98–99% normal results for twitter.com, and x.com (separate query) loaded in 18,474 of 18,714 tests with no confirmed blocks. All 45 confirmed blocks for twitter.com came from a DigitalOcean cloud network (AS14061), not a consumer ISP. If a specific account shows 'withheld in India', that is X applying a government order, not your ISP.
Retrieved 2026-10-15. Volunteers run OONI Probe on their own networks; an anomaly is a signal, not proof. Open these measurements on OONI Explorer.
What we tested through AnyProxy
Tested from our proxy exits, not from a India ISP. Results can change when X changes.
How to unblock from India
A phone on mobile data, a college PC, a managed browser — anything that runs Chrome, Safari, or Firefox works from India.
Singapore is closest for most India networks. Switch if your ISP filters the first hop.
X is fetched from outside your network and opens in this tab. Some features may not work; see tests on this page.
Deep dive · X in India specifically
Feb 2021–Feb 2022: Government issues Section 69A orders covering 1,474 accounts and 175 tweets, later challenged by X (then Twitter). 30 Jun 2023: Karnataka High Court (Justice Krishna S. Dixit) dismisses Twitter's challenge and imposes ₹50 lakh costs. Aug 2023: X files appeal before a division bench; it remains undecided. May 2025: X says India ordered it to block over 8,000 accounts, including news organisations, and that it is withholding them in India only. 24 Sep 2025: Karnataka High Court dismisses X's separate challenge to the Sahyog takedown portal (Section 79(3)(b)). 14 Nov 2025: X appeals the Sahyog ruling. Jul–Oct 2026: OONI: 28,663 of 29,232 tests of twitter.com from India load normally.
Under Section 69A of the IT Act the government sends X confidential blocking orders naming accounts or posts. X does not remove them globally; it 'withholds' them for viewers it locates in India, so the block is applied by X based on your location, not by your ISP. A separate route, the Sahyog portal, sends takedown notices under Section 79(3)(b). Network-level blocking of the whole site is not visible in OONI data.
In our automated tests through AnyProxy on 15 October 2026, X profile pages stayed blank in Singapore and Virginia, and Frankfurt showed an error. In a separate run the same afternoon, a regular Chrome window via Singapore partly loaded a profile and the Virginia sign-in page worked (see the X page). Expect X to be unreliable through a web proxy, especially without an account.
DNS snapshot
We scanned 15 public DNS resolvers worldwide for x.com. Below is what each resolver returned. This shows how the domain resolves from public resolvers outside your network, not what your ISP returns.
Snapshot from DomainScan on 2026-10-05. A resolver that gave no answer is not proof of blocking in India; see the measurements above for in-country evidence.

Legal in India?
Using a web proxy is legal in India. What you access through it is still governed by Indian law and any active court-ordered content takedowns.
Nothing on this page constitutes legal advice. If your workplace policy prohibits proxies specifically, that policy still applies; the fact that the tool is legal does not override an agreement you signed with a network operator.
