An edge server is a physical server placed geographically close to end users — the network "edge" — to reduce latency compared to a distant origin.

In depth

The word "edge" is relative to the network core. A CDN edge server in Frankfurt is at the edge from a European user's perspective and in the network core from an origin data centre's perspective. Modern content architectures push as much work as possible to edge servers — static asset caching, dynamic content assembly, TLS termination, request authentication, sometimes full-app rendering with edge functions.
