Why WhatsApp Web is blocked in China

It's the network in front of you

In China, a nationwide WhatsApp Web ban is ongoing — usually enforced at the ISP level, and sometimes at the deep-packet-inspection layer. What is more common is a block on the network you are actually using — a college campus, an office, a hostel, or an ISP that throttles video during peak hours.

Occasionally the picture is broader. During exams some states restrict streaming on education networks. Specific pages are sometimes taken down under local court orders. But the underlying site stays online — the restriction is a filter sitting between your device and WhatsApp Web's servers.

Because that filter only inspects traffic on its own network, fetching the page through one of our servers outside it returns WhatsApp Web exactly as it loads everywhere else. No app to install, no settings to change on your device.

On networks from China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile, the block usually sits between your device and WhatsApp Web at the ISP or workplace level — not at WhatsApp Web's end.

How to unblock from China

Three steps

1

Open this page on any device

A phone on mobile data, a college PC, a managed browser — anything that runs Chrome, Safari, or Firefox works from China.

2

Keep Singapore, or pick another region

Singapore is closest for most China networks. Switch if your ISP filters the first hop.

3

Press Browse

WhatsApp Web loads in this tab, fetched from outside your network. Use as normal.

Context — China's filtering

How the block actually works here

The Great Firewall (GFW) makes China the most technically sophisticated censorship regime online. Google, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, X, WhatsApp, ChatGPT, and virtually all Western social platforms are blocked. Deep packet inspection is used at scale; new circumvention techniques are actively probed and blocked.

On WhatsApp Web specifically: The GFW combines DNS poisoning, IP blocking, keyword filtering, TLS SNI inspection, and active probing. Consumer VPNs frequently fail; obfuscated protocols work best. The mechanics matter because WhatsApp Web — as a messaging platform — hits multiple layers of the filter at once: the domain shows on DNS blocklists, the destination IPs are known, and the TLS handshake is fingerprintable.

Language note: Users searching in 普通话 (Mandarin) looking for WhatsApp Web access typically land on network-level workarounds first — DNS-over-HTTPS or a public DNS resolver. Those help against DNS-only blocks; they do not help against IP or DPI-level filtering. A web proxy handles all three layers because it moves the destination lookup off your network entirely.

Whichever ISP you are on in China, the network sees only an encrypted connection to AnyProxy. The destination — WhatsApp Web — never appears in your ISP's traffic logs, only ours.

Deep dive · WhatsApp Web in China specifically

The specific story on this combination

History

WhatsApp has been blocked in China since September 2017, when the Great Firewall was upgraded to block WhatsApp's proprietary end-to-end message protocol as part of the pre-19th Party Congress internet lockdown. The block was initially intermittent (text messages working, voice/video failing) but expanded to a full block within weeks. WhatsApp Web was blocked at the same time. There has been no policy signal since suggesting the block will lift — Meta is not registered as a Chinese online service provider under the 2016 Cybersecurity Law.

How the block works here specifically

The Great Firewall uses layered enforcement on WhatsApp traffic: DNS poisoning on whatsapp.com and web.whatsapp.com (queries return empty or block-page IPs), IP-level blocking on Meta / WhatsApp server ranges (packets dropped in transit), and DPI on the WhatsApp XMPP-derived protocol signature. Even users on obfuscated VPN tunnels who reach a WhatsApp server IP often see their traffic dropped by the DPI protocol match. Web access via a proxy over ordinary HTTPS to a mainstream proxy domain sidesteps all three layers — the DPI signature never appears because the payload is TLS-wrapped inside the proxy connection.

Per-ISP behaviour
China TelecomDNS poisoning is most aggressive here. DoH sometimes helps first hop but IP+DPI still blocks.
China UnicomSimilar to China Telecom but with more aggressive rate-limiting on proxy connections during politically sensitive periods.
China MobileMobile networks add cellular-specific DPI. Web proxy over HTTPS on mobile Chrome is the most reliable path.
The approach that works

Install WhatsApp on your phone before entering China. Once inside China, open Chrome or Safari on your laptop, go to anyproxy.site, paste web.whatsapp.com, pick Singapore region (closest at ~78 ms), scan the QR code with your WhatsApp app. Chat messages sync reliably; voice/video calls through WhatsApp Web are limited by browser WebRTC which does not tunnel cleanly through a browser proxy.

What to watch out for
  • Installing WhatsApp after arrival is not possible — the app is not distributed on Chinese app stores. Install before travel.
  • Voice and video calls through WhatsApp Web use WebRTC which does not route through a browser proxy — calls may fail even if messaging works.
  • Signing up a new WhatsApp account from a Chinese phone number fails at the SMS verification step — WhatsApp verification SMS is blocked. Use an existing account only.
  • Users are responsible for compliance with local Chinese law regarding internet-access tools. This page describes technical function, not legal advice.

Legal in China?

Yes — with the usual caveats

Users are responsible for compliance with local law. This page describes general filtering context; site availability varies by network.

Nothing on this page constitutes legal advice. If your workplace policy prohibits proxies specifically, that policy still applies; the fact that the tool is legal does not override an agreement you signed with an employer or a school.

FAQ

WhatsApp Web in China

Is it legal to access WhatsApp Web in China?
WhatsApp Web itself is ordinary web infrastructure. A proxy is ordinary web infrastructure. You remain bound by local law and any specific court-ordered takedown in China.
Do I need a VPN to open WhatsApp Web in China?
Not for one browser tab. A VPN protects your whole device all the time; if you only need WhatsApp Web on one network, a web proxy is lighter and free.
Will my ISP in China see it?
They can see you connected to AnyProxy over an encrypted link, but not the WhatsApp Web pages inside it. We do not keep the URLs you open.
Can I use the WhatsApp desktop app in China through a proxy?
No. The desktop app uses the same proprietary protocol as the mobile app, which the Great Firewall blocks at the DPI layer. A proxy defeats DNS and IP blocks but not the protocol-level DPI unless the traffic is wrapped in HTTPS to a non-blocked domain — which is exactly what WhatsApp Web through anyproxy.site does. Use the web version in a browser, not the desktop app.
What happens if the Great Firewall detects my proxy connection?
A web proxy over ordinary HTTPS to a mainstream domain is difficult to distinguish from ordinary web browsing. If a specific proxy domain gets added to a Chinese regulator blocklist, connection to that domain fails cleanly — nothing catastrophic, but you would need to try a different region or proxy. AnyProxy runs six regions; if one is degraded, switch in the picker.
Are there Chinese-market messaging alternatives that work?
WeChat is the dominant messaging platform in mainland China and works normally there — but requires a Chinese phone number for account setup and is subject to different content moderation. Signal and Telegram are also blocked in China. For users needing to keep an existing WhatsApp account working from inside China, the web-plus-proxy approach is the practical path.
