Definition

Kominfo was Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Information Technology; renamed Komdigi in October 2024, it still runs the national website blocklist.

In depth

On 21 October 2024 the new government of President Prabowo Subianto renamed the ministry the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi). It blocks sites in two ways. Content blocks go on TrustPositif, a list in use since 2010 under a 2014 regulation on 'negative' internet content; OONI and Sinar Project counted more than 1,000,000 websites on it by September 2022. Measuring 62 ISPs from January to June 2022, they confirmed 414 blocked sites, about 95% of them blocked by DNS hijacking. Registration blocks hit services that have not registered as private electronic system operators (PSE): on 30 July 2022 Steam, Epic Games, PayPal and Yahoo became unreachable, and Steam returned within days once Valve registered. In August 2024 the ministry blocked DuckDuckGo over gambling and pornography in its results, Reuters reported. Blocks can be lifted. In July 2026 Komdigi restored access to reddit.com after about 11 years, citing Reddit's registration and its geoblocking of illegal content for Indonesian users. The ministry's TrustPositif checker did not load from outside Indonesia when we tried it on 15 October 2026.

Kominfo in the real world

Because most Indonesian blocks are DNS answers from the ISP's resolver, the same site can fail on one network and load on another that uses a different resolver. A lifted block does not guarantee access through a proxy, either: after Komdigi restored Reddit in July 2026, Reddit itself refused all three AnyProxy free regions in our 15 October 2026 tests. TrustPositif's public checker timed out through AnyProxy's Singapore server and from our own connection outside Indonesia.

Questions about Kominfo

Is Kominfo the same as Komdigi?
Yes. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) became the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) on 21 October 2024, when President Prabowo's cabinet took office.
Why does a different DNS server sometimes unblock sites in Indonesia?
OONI found about 95% of confirmed blocks in early 2022 were DNS hijacking by ISPs, so another resolver often avoids them. It does not help with the rest, or on networks that force their own DNS.
Is Reddit still blocked in Indonesia?
No. Komdigi restored access in July 2026 after about 11 years. Reddit now refuses many proxy and data-centre addresses itself; in our 15 October 2026 tests it blocked AnyProxy's Singapore, Frankfurt and US servers.
