AI chat tools sit in an unusual category compared to social media or streaming. The block usually is not from your local ISP — the block is from the AI provider itself, refusing to serve certain countries by policy. This cornerstone covers the four major AI chat services (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity), where each is region-restricted, why proxies work, and the specific per-service quirks.
The distinction: provider-side vs network-side blocks
Most site blocks are network-side — your ISP, workplace filter, or country-level firewall drops packets to the destination. The countermeasure changes where the request comes from (a proxy in a different location).
AI service blocks are provider-side. OpenAI’s edge infrastructure receives the request from your IP, checks the country via GeoIP, and either returns a “not available” response or lets the login page load but silently fails on API calls. The countermeasure is the same — a proxy that presents a supported-region IP — but the failure mode is different. When you try ChatGPT from Iran directly, you get through to openai.com (Iranian ISPs do not block it), then hit a wall at OpenAI’s own API layer.
This has three practical implications:
- DNS and IP changes at your ISP do nothing. The block is not at the network you can control.
- A proxy must reach a supported region. Any proxy that routes through Frankfurt, Singapore, or Virginia works. A proxy routing through, say, Tehran (if one existed) would fail identically to a direct connection.
- After login, the service may re-check region per API call. Some services check on every chat message. Others check only at session start. If chats fail immediately after login succeeds, the API layer is re-checking — try a different supported region.
ChatGPT (OpenAI)

Served in: Most of Europe, the Americas, East Asia excluding China, South Asia, most of Africa, most of Oceania. The list has expanded since 2023.
Working proxy regions: Frankfurt, Singapore, Virginia (all AnyProxy free-tier), London, Tokyo (Pro). Any of these presents an IP OpenAI serves.
What works: GPT-3.5, GPT-4, GPT-4o (or whichever current default), custom GPTs, browsing, DALL-E through ChatGPT. Plus subscribers keep Plus features. Session persistence across turns works.
What fails: Phone-number verification for new account signup uses phone-network SMS delivery that OpenAI does not attempt to blocked-country numbers. Use an existing account created outside the blocked country. Paying for Plus with a Russian Mir card fails at Stripe processing regardless of proxy.
Specific dynamics:
- Iran (fully blocked): proxy through Frankfurt works reliably. Chat sessions persist. Users are responsible for compliance with local law.

Claude (Anthropic)
Not served in: Similar list to OpenAI but with some differences. Anthropic maintains its own supported-country list.
Served in: US, UK, EU, Canada, Japan, and expanding.
Working proxy regions: Same as ChatGPT — Frankfurt, Singapore, Virginia.
What works: Claude 4.5 Sonnet and Claude 4.7 Opus web interfaces. Login with existing account. Chat sessions persistent.
What fails: New account signup from blocked-country phone number fails at verification. Some experimental features (Projects, Artifacts) may have additional geographic restrictions during rollout.
Specific dynamics: Anthropic’s list is smaller than OpenAI’s and expands more conservatively. Where ChatGPT is available, Claude may not be, and vice versa.
Gemini (Google)
Not served in: Iran, China, Cuba, North Korea, Syria, and other US-sanctioned regions. Russia limited.
Served in: Most of the world.
Working proxy regions: Same as above.
What works: Gemini 2.0 Flash and Gemini 2.0 Pro. Login with Google account.
What fails: Signing into a Google account that has never had international login history may trigger heavier security checks. Enable 2FA on the Google account before switching to proxy-based access.
Specific dynamics: Google’s geo-blocking is intertwined with Google Cloud availability more broadly. Region-blocked users often see multiple Google services degraded at once, not just Gemini.
Perplexity
Not served in: Smaller blocked list than the big three. Perplexity has expanded internationally more aggressively.
Served in: Most countries.
Working proxy regions: Any AnyProxy region.
What works: Perplexity chat, focus modes, source citations, Pro features.
What fails: Fewer restrictions than ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini. Sometimes rate-limited on free tier when many users come from the same proxy IP; retry works.
Universal login pattern for AI services
Every AI chat service uses the same login safety pattern:
- Open the destination URL through the proxy — wait for chat.openai.com, claude.ai, gemini.google.com/app, or perplexity.ai to load with its own URL.
- Enter your account password only on that real destination page. Never on anyproxy.site itself.
- Complete any 2FA challenge as normal.
- Expect a “new device / new location” security notification to your registered email. Confirm it.

What breaks even with a proxy
- Phone-number verification for new account signup. All four services require phone verification. SMS delivery to blocked-country phone numbers usually fails at the phone network level, not at the AI service’s server. Proxy does not help here — use an existing account or set up an account from a supported region before switching to proxy-based access.
- Payment for paid tiers using blocked-country cards. Stripe (used by OpenAI and Anthropic) does not process Iranian, Cuban, Syrian cards. Russian Mir cards do not connect to Stripe. Use an international card or a payment method the provider accepts.
- API access with sanctioned-country originating credentials. Enterprise or developer API tiers have additional country compliance checks beyond consumer chat.
Which AI tool works best from which country
Country-specific recommendations based on GA4 traffic patterns and provider policies as of September 2026:
- From Iran: ChatGPT via Frankfurt is the primary use case (rising cluster). Claude and Gemini both work; Perplexity as backup.
- From China: All four work via Singapore proxy. Local alternatives (Doubao, Qwen) are Chinese-domestic products with different content moderation.
- From Russia: ChatGPT via Frankfurt is common. Local alternatives (YandexGPT, GigaChat) are Kremlin-adjacent products.
- From Turkey / Pakistan / Indonesia: All four generally accessible directly; proxy needed only for corporate/school network blocks.
- From Brazil / India / most of Africa: Direct access works; proxy needed only for institutional filters.
When you need a VPN instead of a proxy for AI chat
Two clear cases:
Mobile AI apps: the ChatGPT iOS/Android app, Claude mobile app, Gemini app — these do not route through browser proxy. Use a VPN for the app, or use the web version in a mobile browser through a proxy.
Long sustained sessions on a phone: if you need AI chat on the go across hours, a VPN with always-on tunnel simplifies things. For casual browser-tab use, the proxy is lighter.
