Messaging apps get blocked for different reasons than social media. Where governments block social platforms over content or reach, they block messaging apps over VoIP (voice-over-IP eating telecom revenue), encryption (making surveillance harder), and mobilisation potential (WhatsApp during Egypt 2011, Telegram during Iran protests). The universal messaging rule through a browser proxy: text chat works, voice and video calls do not. WebRTC (the underlying tech for calls) negotiates paths outside the browser proxy and either bypasses it (leaking IP) or fails to establish. This constraint applies to every messaging platform equally.

WhatsApp

Blocked at national level: China (fully, since 2017), Iran (VoIP partially, messaging partial). UAE + Saudi Arabia block WhatsApp voice/video calls specifically.

How the block works: DPI on WhatsApp’s proprietary protocol. IP blocking on Meta/WhatsApp server ranges. DNS poisoning on whatsapp.com and web.whatsapp.com.

Browser workaround via WhatsApp Web: requires QR-code pairing with the mobile app already installed. Chat, media, groups, sticker sharing work. Voice/video calls do not tunnel cleanly through browser proxy.

Critical prerequisite for China specifically: install the WhatsApp mobile app before entering China. The Chinese app stores do not distribute WhatsApp. If you arrive without it installed, you cannot install it inside China without a working VPN.

Telegram

Blocked at national level: China (fully), Iran (partial — periodic full blocks + always-partial DPI), Russia (was blocked 2018-2020, unblocked, may return), UAE (voice/video calls blocked).

How the block works: DPI on Telegram’s MTProto protocol. IP blocking on Telegram DC ranges. Telegram has invested in bypass technologies (MTProxy, native obfuscation).

Browser workaround via Telegram Web: web.telegram.org loads through a proxy. Chat, channels, groups, media, stickers all work. Sign in via phone verification (needs SMS to reach your phone — may fail in blocked countries). Voice chat and video in channels use WebRTC and often fail through browser proxy.

Specific advantage: Telegram natively supports MTProxy (a Telegram-specific proxy protocol) with obfuscation. This is separate from web proxies but relevant for full-app coverage.

Discord

Blocked at national level: China (fully), Iran (fully), Saudi Arabia (intermittent), UAE (intermittent). Corporate networks worldwide block it as “gaming” or “chat” category.

How the block works: DPI on Discord’s WebSocket protocol. IP blocking on Discord CDN. Category-filtering on corporate proxies.

Browser workaround via discord.com: text channels, DM, server discovery, message history all work. Voice channels work with mic permission (may be blocked at OS level on managed devices). Screen sharing works if browser has screen-share permission. Video calls through browser use WebRTC — often unreliable through proxy.

Bot and integration behaviour: bots run on Discord’s side, not yours. They continue working normally regardless of your access method.

Signal

Blocked at national level: China (fully), Iran (partial), Egypt (occasional), Saudi Arabia (occasional).

How the block works: Signal has invested heavily in domain fronting and bypass technology, but is often blocked at IP level in DPI-heavy countries. Signal’s proxy support is native — the app can route through user-configured proxies.

Browser workaround via signal.org: Signal is primarily a mobile-first app. The web/desktop version requires linking with a mobile device and supports fewer features than the mobile app. Full functionality on desktop or web is limited.

Specific advantage: Signal’s native proxy support in the mobile app means users in blocked countries can configure a proxy directly in Signal without using a browser workaround. This is often more reliable than trying to reach Signal via a web proxy.

Messenger (Facebook)

Blocked at national level: wherever Facebook is blocked (China, Iran). Corporate networks that block Facebook usually block Messenger too.

How the block works: Inherits Facebook’s block posture — DNS + IP + DPI on Meta domains.

Browser workaround via messenger.com: web version works. Chat, group chat, media sharing. Voice/video via WebRTC — unreliable through browser proxy. Reactions and emoji work.

Mobile app: does not route through browser proxy.

The VoIP-specific problem

Voice and video calling is the consistent failure mode across every messaging platform through browser proxies. The reason is WebRTC. WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) is the browser API behind calls. To find the best network path to a peer, WebRTC uses STUN servers, which reveal all your device’s IP addresses — including the real one, before the proxy tunnel would wrap it. Additionally, WebRTC prefers direct UDP peer-to-peer connections, which do not go through the browser’s HTTP proxy configuration.

The practical implications:

  • Text chat works reliably. All messaging platforms.
  • Voice calls fail or leak your real IP. All platforms.
  • Video calls fail or leak. All platforms.
  • Group audio (spaces, channels’ voice rooms) fails. All platforms.

For call functionality, the alternatives are:

  • VPN instead of proxy. VPN routes WebRTC through the tunnel because it’s whole-device.
  • Native app + native proxy support (Signal, Telegram). Their apps handle proxy config internally without WebRTC leaks.
  • Accept text-only through browser proxy. For most users, this is the practical choice.

The corporate/school messaging block

Corporate and school networks block messaging platforms as a distraction category. The specific filter categories:

  • “Instant messaging” — WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Signal.
  • “Chat” — Discord.
  • “Gaming” — Discord (categorised as gaming due to Discord’s roots).
  • “Social media” — Messenger (as part of Facebook).

Web proxies bypass the network block by routing through the proxy domain. Use for essentials on work networks, not for hours of chat.

The China-specific messaging landscape

WeChat is the dominant messaging platform in mainland China and works normally there. WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Discord, Messenger are all blocked. For visitors to China who need to maintain existing accounts on Western platforms:

  • Install every messaging app you use before entering China.
  • Set up 2FA on every account so you can sign in from proxied sessions with 2FA challenge as backup.
  • Sign into WhatsApp Web via QR pairing through the proxy for text chat.
  • Accept that voice/video calls will not work reliably through browser proxy.
  • Users are responsible for compliance with local Chinese law.

The Iran-specific messaging landscape

Iran has periodic and permanent blocks on Western messaging platforms. WhatsApp is partially available; Telegram has been repeatedly blocked and unblocked; Signal and Discord are fully blocked at the DPI layer.

Iranian users routinely reach these platforms via proxies and VPNs, though provider-side geo-blocks add another layer for services like Signal that check IP location. For maintaining messaging continuity from Iran, browser access via a Frankfurt proxy region is the most-tested approach.

Signal’s proxy support — the exception

Among messaging apps, Signal has invested most explicitly in supporting user-configured proxies inside the native app. Users can enter a proxy address in Signal’s settings and route all Signal traffic through it — no browser required. This is often more reliable than trying to reach Signal via a web proxy because it preserves the native app’s full functionality including voice and video calls (through the app-managed proxy, not through WebRTC).

For users who specifically need Signal for its security properties, using Signal’s native proxy support is preferred over the browser-based workaround.

The one-line summary per platform

  • WhatsApp: Web via QR pairing. Install before travel to blocked country.
  • Telegram: Web works. MTProxy for full app if needed.
