Video is the second most-common use case for web proxies after simple social media browsing. The question that trips users up is “why does YouTube play through the proxy but Netflix does not”. The answer is DRM — a client-side technology that specifically detects proxied network paths and refuses playback. This cornerstone maps which video services work and why, so you can pick the right tool for the streaming you actually want.

The DRM divide

Every video streaming service in 2026 falls into one of two categories: DRM-protected or unprotected.

Unprotected video: YouTube (except YouTube Movies rentals and some studio-uploaded content), Vimeo, Dailymotion, TikTok, Instagram Reels, X video, Facebook video, Twitch, most news sites’ embedded video, most educational platforms.

DRM-protected video: Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, HBO Max, Peacock, Paramount+, Apple TV+, and every other paid streaming service.

Web proxies handle unprotected video cleanly because rendering the video stream is a straightforward HTTP request that gets proxied like any other web content. DRM-protected video refuses proxied playback because the DRM stack in your browser (Widevine on Chrome/Edge/Firefox, PlayReady on Windows, FairPlay on Apple platforms) verifies the playback environment before releasing decryption keys — and a proxied network path fails that check.

For a proxy user, the practical distinction is: if it’s free (ad-supported or user-uploaded), it plays. If it’s paid streaming, it doesn’t.

Why DRM specifically refuses proxied streams

DRM does more than encrypt the video. It checks:

  • The browser binary is unmodified (signed correctly).
  • The secure hardware path exists (Widevine L1 requires TEE).
  • The OS is not in developer mode or rooted.
  • The network path looks like a direct client-to-CDN connection.

That last check is what fails for proxies. When your browser fetches a video segment through anyproxy.site, the DRM stack sees a request that does not match the direct-connection pattern it expects. Even though the video content itself would decode correctly, the DRM stack refuses to release the decryption keys.

The failure mode varies by service:

  • Netflix: shows error M7111-1331 or similar. Playback never starts.
  • Disney+: silent black screen. Video controls appear but playback fails.
  • Prime Video: drops to lowest quality (240p) or fails silently.
  • HBO Max: “playback error” page.

None of these are proxy-fixable. A VPN preserves the DRM check because it does not alter the client-server path from DRM’s perspective — only the source IP changes. Use VPN for DRM streaming.

What plays cleanly through a proxy

The unprotected side is broad and covers most video the average user wants:

Educational platforms. Coursera, Khan Academy, most MOOCs work. Some enterprise-tier LMS video uses DRM and fails.

When Pro tier makes a difference

The free tier of any decent proxy plays 720p reliably. Pro tier value comes from three specific dimensions:

1080p vs 720p. Free is capped at 720p on AnyProxy (and most competitors). Pro unlocks 1080p. For a laptop or desktop screen, 720p is watchable but noticeably lower than direct playback. 1080p on Pro matches direct playback quality.

Live streams — the specific case

Live video is different from pre-recorded video in one important way: it uses ongoing connections rather than one-shot fetches. This matters for proxies:

Live streams that work: YouTube Live, Twitch, Instagram Live viewing, TikTok Live viewing, Facebook Live viewing.

Live streams that are unreliable: Starting Live yourself on Instagram / TikTok / YouTube. Starting a live stream requires stable outbound bandwidth and often uses WebRTC-adjacent protocols that do not tunnel cleanly through browser proxies.

Live streams that fail: Netflix Live events, DRM-protected sports broadcasts, paid pay-per-view events.

For sustained live viewing, region choice matters more than for pre-recorded video — pick the nearest region to minimise buffer under-runs.

Buffering troubleshooting

If proxied video buffers, the debug order:

  1. Switch region. Frankfurt → Singapore → Virginia, or vice versa depending on your location. Region latency shows in the picker.
  2. Lower video quality manually. YouTube gear icon → 480p if 720p is buffering. Auto usually picks well but manual override sometimes helps.
  3. Close background tabs. Every open tab consumes bandwidth.
